Profile
Anacostia Organics at 2022 Martin Luther King Jr Avenue SE holds a singular place in Washington DC’s cannabis history — it is the only licensed dispensary east of the Anacostia River, serving Ward 8 communities that were entirely without access when the city’s first round of medical cannabis licenses was awarded. After years of advocacy that led to emergency legislation by the DC Council reopening the licensing process, Anacostia Organics opened on January 24, 2019 with a ribbon cutting attended by Mayor Muriel Bowser and Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton. CEO Linda Mercado Greene, whose background spans decades of work on Capitol Hill, in PR, and in advocacy, founded AO alongside her daughter Tamia Harper (Director and General Manager) and built it into the only DC cannabis business to hold a DSLBD Certified Business Enterprise designation in the District. The store sits on Martin Luther King Jr Avenue in the historic Anacostia neighborhood, reachable on foot from the Anacostia Metro Station (Green Line, about ten minutes via Shannon Place) and by Metrobus routes serving Southeast DC and nearby Prince George’s County communities in Maryland. Under DC’s self-attestation system — a regulatory change AO was instrumental in advancing — any adult 21 or older with a valid government-issued ID can self-certify as a medical patient online at no cost for DC residents, or for a fee for non-residents, with no doctor visit required; out-of-state medical card holders from more than 30 states are also welcome. The menu covers flower, pre-rolls, edibles, concentrates, and accessories with a curated, community-focused selection. New patients receive 20% off their first purchase, an in-store discount program and active loyalty points system reward return visits, and pre-orders with curbside pickup are available. Anacostia Organics suits recreational adults and medical patients in Anacostia, Congress Heights, Barry Farm, Hillcrest, Fairlawn, Ward 7, and Ward 8 — and anyone visiting Southeast DC — who want the only licensed dispensary east of the river, rooted in the neighborhood it serves since 2019.
